The house is situated 4 km from the centre of St. Remy, a delightful old market town in the heart of the Alpilles area of Provence. The lovely old town centre has pretty streets, delightful shops and quiet squares and the lively boulevard surrounding the centre offers a great choice of lively cafes and restaurants. The whole area is rich in history. The ancient Roman town of 'Glanum', the St. Paul Mausoleum from where Van Gogh produced many of his paintings of the region, and the beautiful Alpilles mountains are a short drive away.
Pine forests, olive groves and vineyards provide the quintessential provencal landscape. The historic cities of Avignon, Arles, Nimes and Aix en Provence are within easy exploring distance. The UNESCO world heritage site of the Pont du Gard, the perched villages of the Parc Naturel du Luberon and the Camargue are also very close as is the Mediterranean sea - within an hours drive. There is also range of sports and activities available in the area including walking, golf, tennis and horse riding.
The House
Mas Bonheur is a lovely old 'mas', a provencal farmhouse in a peaceful location in the countryside just outside the town and is surrounded by fields and cypress trees. The house has been restored to a charming and comfortable country home and retains many original features and interesting nooks and crannies. There is a large and well equipped country kitchen with fridge freezer, oven & hob, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. The dining room leads out on to the terrace at the front of the house and has an open fireplace. On the first floor is a large galleried double aspect living room leading up to the second floor sitting room with views across the fields. The house has permanent broadband Wifi internet connection and there is a CD Hifi, DVD and video and television (French channels only) for entertainment
There are four bedrooms and three bath/shower rooms. These comprise on the first floor, one double room with king size bed and en suite bathroom with large bath and shower, on the second floor a further double bedroom and a twin bedroom which share a bathroom with hand shower. The fourth bedroom with small double bed and small shower room is on the ground floor.
There is a large garden which is green and welcoming even in the heat of summer. The front of the house is dominated by a splendid "micocoulier" (a kind of ash tree) which harbours a swing as well as a hammock and shades a large stone table. The pool is 7m x 13m and is fully equipped with lounging chairs, changing rooms and toilet. There is a permanent outside barbecue (charcoal) and a folding ping pong table. There are also two permanent resident very friendly cats which guests are asked to feed.
Bedlinen and towels, including pool towels are provided together with a cleaning service at the end of your stay
